Does bacopa cause stomach upset? What four trials recorded

Sometimes. Four bacopa studies, three of them at 300-450 mg a day, recorded nausea, cramps or loose stools. We read the abstracts and set out each finding.

Yes, sometimes. In a 12-week placebo-controlled trial of BacoMind at 300 mg a day, bacopa caused more gastrointestinal side effects than placebo: increased stool frequency, abdominal cramps and nausea. A second 12-week trial at the same dose recorded mainly stomach upset, with nine adverse events on bacopa and ten on placebo.

That is the trial-level answer to “does bacopa cause stomach upset”, and it is an evergreen one: the studies date from 2007 to 2023, and the 2026 items this desk found, a review and a trial protocol, are covered below. This desk read the four PubMed abstracts through NCBI’s E-utilities on 3 October 2026.

What do the ranking pages say?

Merck Manuals lists upset stomach, nausea, diarrhoea and fatigue. WebMD, in the portion read for this piece, lists loose stools, gas, nausea and stomach pain or cramps, and says effects may vary with dose. Nootropics.com lists nausea and cramping and advises taking bacopa with food containing fat. In the pages as read, none of the three names a trial, an extract or a dose behind its list.

Does bacopa cause stomach upset in trials?

Every cell below is from the abstract, not the full paper. Where an abstract does not print a figure, the cell says so.

How strong is that evidence?

Morgan and Stevens 2010 is the strongest row: a placebo arm, and an abstract that says plainly bacopa caused the effects. It gives no frequency, so any percentage you see attached to it came from somewhere else. Calabrese 2008 points the other way on numbers, with similar adverse-event counts in both groups; the abstract calls the dose well tolerated and runs no test on the difference, so read it as “similar counts”, not “no effect”.

The bottom two rows cannot show cause, because nobody took a placebo. Keegan 2023 is the only study here that turns gut trouble into a dropout figure. Pravina 2007 was written by researchers at Natural Remedies, which makes BacoMind.

The abstracts of Stough 2001, Stough 2008, Pase 2012 and Kongkeaw 2014, several of them behind our posts on cycling and how long bacopa takes to work, do not report adverse effects. That is a statement about abstracts, not a finding that those trials saw none.

Is anyone measuring this better?

A June 2026 review of Ayurvedic cognition products found adverse events usually mild but inconsistently captured. A 76-person placebo-controlled trial in India, at 300 mg for 12 weeks, lists adverse events as a secondary outcome; its published protocol targets primary findings for spring 2027, so there are no results to report.

Can bacopa cause diarrhea?

Two of the four studies we read name it or something close. Morgan and Stevens 2010 recorded increased stool frequency against placebo, and the open-label Keegan 2023 study lost four of 35 participants to nausea and diarrhoea. Neither abstract says how many people had loose stools overall, so we cannot give you a rate, and nor can the pages that print one without naming a trial.

Should bacopa be taken with food?

None of the abstracts we read tested it. No trial in the table compared dosing with meals against dosing without, and none reports when in the day participants took their doses. Advice to take bacopa with a fatty meal is, on the evidence this desk read, untested, and the label on the product you buy is the better guide.

What are the side effects of bacopa?

In the abstracts we read, the named ones are gastrointestinal: stomach upset, nausea, abdominal cramps, increased stool frequency and diarrhoea. Merck and WebMD list the same family of symptoms, and Merck adds fatigue. Abstracts summarise; full papers and reference monographs cover more ground, so treat this as the gut-related answer rather than a complete safety profile.

Where this leaves the label-reader

The studied dose was 300 mg of a named or standardised extract. A blend that hides its bacopa figure, like the Focus Factor panel, gives you nothing to set against these rows. None of this is medical advice, and the FDA has not evaluated it. Bacopa is an ingredient in adult supplements not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease; if your stomach objects, that is a question for a clinician, not a forum.
