Does bacopa help with anxiety? What six trials measured
Two 12-week trials reported lower anxiety vs placebo, two found none or a trend, two measured stress instead. No abstract read covers an anxiety disorder.
The trials this desk read are split. Of four bacopa trials that scored anxiety, two 12-week trials at 300 mg a day reported lower anxiety than placebo, one found anxiety unaffected and one found only a trend. Two more measured stress or cortisol, not anxiety. No abstract describes participants diagnosed with an anxiety disorder.
So does bacopa help with anxiety? The answer is evergreen, resting on studies from 2001 to 2025. This desk read the six abstracts below through NCBI’s E-utilities on 31 October 2026, and ran a PubMed search the same day for randomised bacopa studies that mention anxiety. It extends our posts on whether bacopa makes you tired and how long it takes to work.
Does bacopa help with anxiety in clinical trials?
Every cell comes from the abstract, not the full paper.
| Study (PMID) | Daily dose | Length | Participants | What was measured | What the abstract records |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Psychopharmacology 2001 (11498727) | 300 mg | 12 weeks | Not in lines read | State anxiety | Lower than placebo (P<0.001), largest at 12 weeks |
| Calabrese 2008 (18611150) | 300 mg, standardised | 12 weeks, after 6-week placebo run-in | 54 aged 65+, 48 completed | State-Trait Anxiety Inventory | Combined score fell on bacopa, rose on placebo |
| Neuropsychopharmacology 2002 (12093601) | Not in lines read | 3 months | 76 aged 40-65 | Anxiety questionnaire | Unaffected |
| Sathyanarayanan 2013 (23354535) | 450 mg | 12 weeks | 72 aged 35-60 | State and trait anxiety | No significant difference; a trend for lower state anxiety |
| Phytotherapy Research 2014 (23788517) | 320 mg and 640 mg CDRI 08, single doses | Acute crossover | 17 | Mood, salivary cortisol | Some positive mood effects, reduced cortisol |
| Clin Drug Investig 2025 (41091332) | 300 mg Bacumen | 12 weeks | 101 aged 40-70, 87 completed | Self-reported stress reactivity | Greater reduction on bacopa (p = 0.03) |
Which trials found lower anxiety?
The 2001 Psychopharmacology trial tested at baseline, 5 and 12 weeks. Its PubMed record also carries a 2015 erratum for a dosage error in the article text; the abstract states 300 mg, and this desk did not read the correction itself.
Calabrese 2008 recruited older adults without clinical signs of dementia. Combined state plus trait anxiety, depression scores and heart rate fell over time on bacopa and rose on placebo. That is 24 completers a group, all 65 or over.
Which trials found no effect?
The 2002 Neuropsychopharmacology trial says its questionnaire measures of anxiety were unaffected. The 2013 trial, titled as challenging the anti-anxiety effects of bacopa, found no difference on any cognitive measure and only a trend for lower state anxiety. A trend is not a result.
Does bacopa reduce stress?
The 2014 crossover gave KeenMind’s CDRI 08 extract to 17 volunteers during a multitasking test and reported some positive mood effects and reduced cortisol, measured one and two hours after a single dose. The 2025 Bacumen trial, in adults with self-reported memory and attention problems, found no cognitive benefit but a greater fall in self-reported stress reactivity. Its abstract carries a competing-interests statement and says the funder was not involved in data collection or interpretation.
Has bacopa been tested in anxiety disorders?
Not in the record we read. The search returned 15 records. Five are rows in the table; the Bacumen trial’s abstract does not mention anxiety and is not among them. Among the 15, the one trial in generalised anxiety disorder tested a multi-herb formula against clonazepam, not bacopa alone; another pairs cognitive behavioural therapy with bacopa tablets, but is a published protocol with no results. The rest are reviews, protocols, combination products or animal work. A 2021 trial of the Bacognize extract also ranks for this question; this desk did not read it, so it is not in the table.
Does bacopa help with anxiety or stress?
In some trials, not all. Two 12-week trials at 300 mg a day reported lower anxiety scores than placebo; one found anxiety unaffected and a 450 mg trial found only a trend. Two trials that measured stress or cortisol rather than anxiety reported lower stress reactivity or cortisol. The abstracts describe healthy or non-clinical adults, none with a diagnosed anxiety disorder, so none of this says bacopa treats an anxiety disorder.
Does bacopa reduce cortisol?
One small study says so, for a few hours. The 2014 crossover gave 17 healthy volunteers single 320 mg and 640 mg doses of CDRI 08 and measured salivary cortisol around a multitasking test; the abstract reports reduced cortisol levels. No 12-week trial in our table reports a cortisol figure, so whether daily use lowers it is not something these abstracts answer.
How much bacopa should I take for anxiety?
No trial we read set out to find an anxiety dose. The two positive anxiety results came at 300 mg a day for 12 weeks; the 450 mg trial saw only a trend, so more was not better in this small set. Those are study doses, not a recommendation. Follow your product’s label, and ask a doctor or pharmacist before using any supplement for anxiety.
Where this leaves the label-reader
300 mg a day is the dose behind both positive anxiety results. Matching a product to a row needs a printed bacopa figure; our Bacognize vs Synapsa explainer shows what labels print. None of this is medical advice. Bacopa is a supplement ingredient, not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease, and anxiety that affects daily life belongs with a clinician.
